Some young people will have achieved exactly what they hoped for, some will have done even better than they expected while some others will have been disappointed and will be worried about what the future holds for them. The most important thing to remember is that we always need to celebrate any and every success and to remember that there are always plenty of options if plans need to be altered or amended.
Disappointment is a natural reaction, especially if some wonderful, future plan depended on specific results but it’s not the end of the world and there are always other options if the first or even the second plan has to be changed.
Many of us get into the habit of self-criticism very early on. We allow those critical voices to chatter away in our ear ‘oh look… you didn’t do well enough… I knew you’d fail’
It’s too easy to write ourselves off and listen to that criticism and those inner, chattering voices. Wouldn’t it be great if we could develop the brilliant, new habit of focussing on our achievements instead of what we perceive as our failings giving our attention to the positive things we do that can change our lives forever?
Instead of allowing disappointment to colour everything and giving way to bleakness and despondency, wouldn’t this be the ideal time to learn that there is enormous scope for revising plans and that there are always other options? It’s never too late to change our focus from ‘not quite good enough’ to ‘well done, you worked hard, now what’s next? Above all, it’s really important that everyone, whatever age or stage of life, appreciates and celebrates each and every achievement.
Autumn is a really exciting time to refocus, to set new goals and adjust old ones. A cursory glance at the local paper wherever you live lists evening and daytime classes whether that be an introduction to psychology, piano classes or Zumba. Up and down the country, young people are starting or going back to school starting college or university. People are returning to work after the summer or moving into that exciting new job. Everywhere around us there is an exciting sense of new beginnings, new chances there for the taking. For all of us regardless of age or any other factor which so many feel holds them back.
