Spring Forward

4/25/2016

Just a few short weeks ago we all put our clocks forward in anticipation of spring. Since then every second person you meet has had something to say about the weather.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people comment on having lost an hour and grumble and complain about having one less hour in bed, asleep.

Why not think of this as one of the best times of the year, a time a time when you can:
Finish a work day while it’s still light
Anticipate those evenings ahead when you will be able to sit outside or get some gardening in
Walk the dog in the light instead of the dark
Begin to observe all those lovely spring flowers
These may not seem like the most exciting things in the world but there is no doubt that these lighter and brighter evenings have an air of potential about them.

For me the real potential at this time of new growth and seasonal change, is our potential to really achieve those resolutions.

Year after year we force ourselves into making pledges to ourselves. We tell ourselves that this will be the year. Our year. The year we finally lose that weight, give up smoking, change our careers and our lives until they no longer resemble what has always gone before. No more ‘same old same old’ for us. And that’s all fine, the trouble is, we make these resolutions in the depth of winter, just after Christmas with all that socialising and sparkle and just before going into the darkest period of the year.

It’s no surprise that there are so many exercise and fitness DVDs in the dark recesses of all our cupboards.

The making of resolutions is no new thing but it wasn’t always done in January. The ancient Babylonians celebrated the start of a new year in March with a 12 day festival called Aitku which celebrated the spring harvest. In 300 BC the Romans changed the date to January, a month named after their two headed god Janus, who looked both backwards over the old year and forward over the new.  That all makes perfect sense but why not decide to make those changes when you have the best possible chance of success. Maybe those ancient Babylonians had something after all?

Why not try something different this year. If there are changes you want to make why not start now when the days are getting brighter along with our spirits.
