It’s Christmas...

12/12/2019

I can hear the groaning from here as the familiar songs start to boom through all the shops and meeting places we find ourselves in at this time of year.

It seems like some klaxon somewhere has sounded and sent us all scurrying off in a race to frantically start scouring for that perfect present, those stand-out cards and the ingredients for that amazing festive food that is going to delight family and friends alike.

Time off work, hours and days with our families and friends, beautiful gifts to give and receive not to mention all that scrumptious food and drink…what’s not to like? I hear you ask.

Well, quite a lot if I’m honest. Obviously, many people have good reason to dread Christmas, be it estrangement or loss of family and friends or trauma experienced during past festive seasons. It’s interesting how many of us find ourselves reverting to our teenage self the minute we step over our parent’s thresholds as we smoulder with resentment about old sibling rivalries or real and imagined slights.

It doesn’t help that Christmas, in the northern hemisphere, comes at the darkest and gloomiest time of year and all the bright fairy lights and well-lit shops and gathering places in the land could never compensate for how well wrapped up we need to be to venture out of doors.

If we are lucky, this time of year gives us all an opportunity to step out of our normal routines and catch our breath. A valuable chance to evaluate our lives and bring our focus back to what really matters to us.  The joy of spending time with people we love and who love us shouldn’t be underestimated in the frantic dashing about that so many of us indulge in.

Last year at this time, I suggested that we all bring a little sparkle into our lives every day for the whole month of December. I had lots of emails and messages from people who really enjoyed that and am suggesting that we do it all again in 2019.

Let’s make this the year we don’t make those enormous demands on ourselves, and just make it the perfect Christmas for us whatever that looks like.
