New Horizons...

10/3/2019

Summer is over and, as I write this, I’m looking out of the window and can see that the leaves are already turning golden and the trees are beginning to shed their foliage all over my grass.

At this time of year, we all have a golden opportunity to count our blessings as we gather round our dinner tables and catch up with each other. We can look forward to all the sociable events ahead, whether it’s Halloween, Guy Fawkes night or the beginning of the lead up to the festive season, as we get back to our lives and enjoy reconnecting with family and friends after the ‘busyness’ of Summer.

This has always been my very favourite time of year, full of promise and expectation as life calms down and we can all focus on what we want to do before the festive season lands.  But, maybe you feel lost because someone you love has moved on and you feel left behind or you might have waved your son or daughter off as they start the next stage of their journey and you feel sad as you try to work out how to adjust without that familiar role. It’s important to remember that life is always about choices. We could decide that our main purpose in life is over or we could congratulate ourselves on a job well done and change our day-to-day focus to revisit our own dreams and ambitions. Wouldn’t it be great if we had exciting, new experiences to share with our loved ones when they came home for that first eagerly anticipated break?

For me, Autumn has always had bittersweet quality as the nights get longer and the days appear so much shorter as we draw our curtains to keep out the darkness and the cold. There is no better time to revisit those plans and ambitions, which may have been shelved for years. Whether that’s re-training, taking that course or getting an exciting new job.  Even though it may be a long time since many of us left school, we can always make the changes that we dreamed of. It’s good to remember that it’s never too late to try something new, to set exciting goals and plan for future success.

It always feels to me that January isn’t the ideal time to contemplate new goals, especially if we are responding to festive overindulgence by swearing off alcohol, rich food or whatever other excess forms part of our celebrating. There is such a lot of pressure surrounding New Year’s resolutions. We may feel worn-out after the intense shopping and planning of Christmas and it’s little wonder that making those changes is the very last thing on our minds.

Autumn feels full of promise and possibility and there is still plenty of time left to really make a difference as we focus on creating new, positive habits that we can carry with us into the year ahead.

So, if you started 2019 swearing that you were going to give up smoking, drinking or fried foods…forever and that you were definitely going to get up to 10,000 steps a day and make going to the gym a regular feature in your life. Why not look at this in a new and exciting way and focus on setting positive goals for the future?
