Some of you will be well on your way to achieving your goals but many more of you will already have ditched them and settled for the same old habits and routines.
Why do you think it’s always the same story every January? Is it because we’re all weak willed and can’t make changes even if we really think we want to?
Or could it be that the whole concept of New Year’s resolutions is flawed and can’t work.
In my practise, I see people who tell me that they really want to lose weight, stop smoking or change their lives in other ways. Often, although, they clearly want to make these changes, something seems to get in their way time and again.
That can be the dismal weather in January, the sense of anti-climax after Christmas making it difficult to focus or, maybe it’s not what they really want to do.
Perhaps it’s time for a new approach.
Sometimes people make resolutions because they think they should. Someone they live with would like them to stop smoking for example or the media images of all those slim and fit models making them discontented with what they see in the mirror. For you, it could be that your partner thinks you moan about work too much and has taken to telling you that you should change jobs if you’re that unhappy or you should stop moaning about it.
So, the first step in this new approach should be to ask the simple question, ‘do I really want to make this change and is it for me or for someone else?’ The best motivation is always doing something because it enthuses and excites you. Really focus on that for a minute. Can you see yourself as a non-smoker? Do you want to build exercise into your life on a regular and ongoing basis? Can you imagine being in that new job? Can you try your resolutions on for size, own them and see any changes as something you will love and enjoy for the rest of your life? Most importantly of all, are you making those changes for you?
If the answer to those questions is yes, absolutely! Then, you are in the best position you have ever been in to make these changes a reality. You won’t be daunted if it’s not easy and if you have a setback, you will get straight back on to it.
Most importantly, you will begin to treat yourself with a little more care. Just imagine if your partner or your best friend came to you and said “I tried but I failed’ What would your response be? I’m betting it’s not ‘oh, you fool, you’re always doing this, why can’t you stick to anything?’
Now is the time to treat yourself with some of the care that you give to others. It’s time to be your own best friend and you will be amazed at the difference that will make in your life.
